The jutting rock of Devil's Tower National Monument will be a familiar sight to those who have seen Steven Spielberg's 1977 film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." For others, this stone core of a long-gone volcano is just as unusual a sight, with the large peak rising out of nothing other than the flat surrounding land. Hike around the entire base of the tower or embark on one of the trails that head out into the surrounding wilderness after a stop by the visitor center, where more information about the monument and its surroundings is available. Experienced climbers can attempt to scale the tower itself, but for the most part staying on flat land is the preferred method of travel around the park. Located in northeastern Wyoming, the remote park is about a 25-mile drive north from Keyhole State Park.
